Items worn or carried on person

1

Patagonia baggies shorts

I’ve been hiking in baggies for 20 years now.

1

Under Armour polyester short sleeve t-shirt

1 pair

Injinji toe socks

Ended up needing to wear 2 pair

1 pair

Asics Gel Trabuco Trail Runners

Made the mistake of wearing these without a shakedown hike. They were comfortably loose in the forefoot, but the extra foot movement led to hot spots on the balls of my feet. Fixed by doubling up the socks.

1 pair

Orthotics

1

Tilley LTM8 Hat

Good ventilation

1

MTR claim check

1

Scrap of paper with phone #

1

A bit of cash

1

Credit card

A debit card would have been better

1

Medical insurance card

1

Drivers license

2

Contact lenses

Included two fresh lenses in the MTR resupply

1

Native Eye Sunglasses

1

Suunto Core Compass/Altimeter watch

Battery died the 1st night. There is no need for a compass or altimeter on a well marked trail. And no need for a watch at all.

1

Bandanna

1

½ oz contact rewetting eye drops

1

Tin of lip balm

2

REI UL carbon trekking poles

Both failed. The bottom section detached from the nut. This is the 3rd set that has failed. Have since replaced with Black Diamond Carbon

Gear

1

McHale Sarc-chasm Backpack

Use roll top mode. The most comfortable pack I’ve ever had.

1

Western Mountaineering

Apache S-Dry loft Sleeping bag

Plenty warm, didn’t fully zip once. If I did this bag over again would go with the polyester micro-fiber and not the g-tex. The g-tex is less breathable and builds up condensation when used with a bivy sack.

1

Thermarest Neo-Air Large

Most comfortable pad. Loses some pressure as temps drop. Inflated hard before bed.

3

Silnylon stuff sacks

I like to be organized. One is for change of clothes, one for the potty kit, and one in case all food wouldn’t fit in the bear can (didn’t need this last one)

1

Mountain Laurel Design Silnylon Pro Poncho/tarp

5.5’ x 9’. Good coverage while hiking in the rain, and as tarp shelter for one.

6

Ti Stakes

5

Mini-biners

Used for quick clipping guy lines and bivy bug net to tarp

4

8’ Guy lines

1

Six Moon Designs Meteor Bivy

Love this bivy

1

Swiss Army Knife Classic

2

1 liter platypus

30

Katadyn Micropur tablets

Resupplied 30 at Red’s Meadow and 60 at MTR.

1

Princeton-tec Scout Headlamp, no strap

Clipped to hat or collar if needed

½ liter water bottle fitted with nozzle cap

For fuel storage

8 oz

Denatured Alcohol

Resupplied to 8 oz at Red’s Meadow and 12 oz at MTR.

I planned for 1 oz per burn, or 2 oz per day. The caldera cone stove was more efficient than that, probably had 50% too much.

1.0 oz size measuring cup

To meter stove fuel

Extra Clothes

1

Patagonia UL Windbreaker

1

Long pants – nylon

1

1 pair

100 wt fleece gloves

1

100 wt fleece beanie

1

Patagonia silkweight long sleeve t-shirt

1

1 pair Injinji toe socks

Ended up wearing these

This stuff really sticks

5

Benadryl

Resupplied to 24 at MTR

12 tabs

Advil

Resupplied to 12 at MTR

6 tabs each

Sudafed, Imodium, Bisacodyl, Zantac, Dramamine

Included 6 each in my MTR resupply, but left these in the hiker cans. Didn’t use any.

2 sheets

2nd skin

Included 2 more in my MTR resupply but left them in the hiker cans. Used one sheet over the 13 days, gave one away.

5

2nd Skin blister patches

Included 5 more in my MTR resupply. Used them all to cushion hot spots on balls of feet. After doubling socks didn’t need.

1
